If you have problems sleeping, it's not just stress and fatigue.

How sleep affects overall health is something that has been proven by a lot of research.

A number of negative physical and mental conditions are directly linked to little or poor sleep. From heart health and diabetes, to stress and the more predictable feeling of fatigue, sleep is one of the most important things.

But even if you do everything right, i.e. don't eat late at night, avoid exposure to blue radiation just before bed and don't drink coffee after 19:00 p.m., it's not always possible to get a full eight hours of sleep. Somewhere around here the climate crisis enters the equation, as if we didn't already have enough things disrupting Morpheus' sweet embrace.

According to an article in Smithsonian magazine, people have lost an average of 44 hours of sleep every year in recent years due to rising temperatures, a consequence of the climate crisis. The same research reports that things will get much worse and the loss of sleep hours will reach 58 hours by the end of the century.

As with almost all crises, the climate does not affect all people equally, even in their sleep. The analysis of the research shows that warm countries, the elderly and the lower social classes are at greater risk.

The research used special wristbands as smart watches that can monitor the quality and quantity of sleep in 68 different countries. The amount of time and worry required to sleep on a warm night is a perfectly reasonable thought and has worried us all, but when you look at how many hours are wasted and the long-term effects this can have, then it becomes truly frightening .
