Iran's women's football team refused to sing the national anthem before their opening match of the Asian Cup in Australia on Monday, their first match since the start of the war in the Middle East.
All the team's players stood silent during the performance of the anthem before the start of the Group A match against South Korea, which they won 3-0 at the Gold Coast Stadium in Queensland.
Recall that on March 1, Iran declared 40 days of mourning for the assassination of Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, following a coordinated Israeli-US attack.
Iran's coach, Marziyeh Jafari, and her players refused to comment on the war and the death of their supreme leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei.
The Iranian team arrived in Australia to prepare for the tournament days before the airstrikes began in the Middle East, A2CNN reports.
They will face the host nation on Thursday, before playing their third and final group stage match against the Philippines on Sunday.
