The company "Meta" has announced the creation of separate accounts for minors on Instagram with "built-in protection" and greater parental control.

The transfer of teenagers to the new category of teen accounts, Meta said, will be completed within 60 days in the US, Britain, Canada and Australia, as well as in the European Union by the end of this year. The rest of the countries will follow in January.

Instagram will automatically apply the new 'teen account' settings to all users under the age of 18. Users aged 16 and 17 will be able to reset their preferred settings themselves, but users aged 13 – 15 will be required to get parental approval for any changes that involve changing the 'teen account' rules.

Meta promotes a “new, parent-led experience for teens” and promises to better support parents and assure them that teens are safe with the right protective measures.

New features

In particular, teen accounts will change the way Instagram works, with some settings enabled by default. Accounts will have strict controls on sensitive content to prevent recommendations of potentially harmful material and overnight mute notifications.

Accounts will also be set to private instead of public, meaning teens will have to actively accept new followers, while the content of their accounts will not be seen by people who don't follow them.
