Gianni Infantino spoke during an official visit to Algeria, recalling his memories of Algerian football and one of the most controversial episodes in the history of the 1982 World Cup.
The FIFA President emphasized that he followed with particular emotion the performance of the Algeria national football team in that World Cup, when he was only 12 years old, praising the team as a team that won the hearts of fans around the world.
He also praised the Desert Warriors' famous performance against West Germany, describing it as a match in which Algeria showed extraordinary strength and tactical organisation. According to him, that performance remains one of the most special moments of that tournament.
However, Infantino also referred to the famous event called the "match of shame", held between Germany and Austria, which led to Algeria's elimination from the group stage despite two victories.
He declared: "Everyone knows what happened in the third match," referring to a situation that later led to significant changes in FIFA regulations, where it was decided that the final group matches would be played at the same time to guarantee fair play.
His visit to Algeria also had a developmental character, as it focused on strengthening cooperation between FIFA and the Algerian Football Federation, including infrastructure projects, the development of training centers and investments in young talents on the African continent. /GazetaExpress/
