The technical adviser of the Croatian auto club, Marin Morava, explained how we can shorten the working life of the gear shifter itself.
If we don't press it hard enough when shifting gears, there can be a scraping noise, he said.
“If it happened to you for the first time, it probably won't have a detrimental effect on the proper operation of the gearbox. By repeating this event often, the synchronous gear ring can be damaged, in which this action happens often", Morava emphasized.
"When synchronous rings are damaged, they lose their role to equalize the number of revolutions between the two shafts to shift gear more easily and without interference. The driver will feel this problem as increased resistance to the movement of the gear lever when entering gear, with the presence of a mechanical squeak," he added.
It is recommended to go to the service center as soon as possible, because there are other possible causes that can cause similar symptoms. Any tact and waiting can only make the problem worse.
"There may be metal beads in the oil, which are caused by irregular wear during gear shifting. The debris damages the bearings and gear, and in the worst case, it is possible to completely damage the gearbox and lose the vehicle's movement," said Morava.
What might happen if we shift the transmission from, say, 6th gear to XNUMXnd gear at high vehicle speed?
"The possibility of going beyond the specified maximum number of engine revolutions is open, which can certainly be detrimental to the mechanics of the engine to the level of major mechanical damage," he said.
