The Association of Kosovo Municipalities has reacted to the obligation of the Central Election Commission that obliges municipalities to cover payments for support staff engaged in the election process.
According to the executive director of the Association of Municipalities, Sazan Ibrahimi, this constitutes an unfair shift of financial responsibilities and a direct blow to municipal budgets.
In a statement to IndeksOnline, Ibrahimi says that municipalities are already under great financial pressure.
"The situation becomes even more worrying when it is known that the central level has still not executed payments for the same staff from past election processes.
"The AKM makes it clear that the organization and financing of elections is the exclusive responsibility of the CEC and not of the municipalities," he said.
On this occasion, Ibrahimi has requested that the CEC stop this practice and assume all financial obligations related to the electoral process.
"Any attempt to transfer election costs to municipalities is unacceptable and will be strongly opposed by local government," Ibrahimi concluded.
