German Chancellor Friedrich Merz has said he had low expectations for talks held over the weekend in Islamabad, Pakistan, between the US and Iran.
Speaking in Berlin earlier this morning, Merz said: "I was not surprised by the decision to break off the talks in Islamabad. From the beginning, I did not have the impression that (the talks) were particularly well prepared."
Merz also implied that a diplomatic solution will not be a quick process and stressed that the economic effects will continue to be felt for some time.
"This will remain a long-term process and we will continue to feel the consequences of this war for a long time, even after it ends," he added.
Merz last week expressed reservations about the outcome of the talks, saying he thought peace was still a long way off.
