These dramatic images were recorded during the moment a 12-story building burned down very close to the "Mother Teresa" hospital in Tirana.
Hundreds of people blocked the main road as they watched in shock and tears as the building was engulfed in flames from the outside in minutes. Some of them appeared shaken, while police set up a security perimeter to keep them away from the fire.
Over three hours were spent battling the flames by 100 firefighters, assisted by two Cougar helicopters. Based on the information so far, it is suspected that the fire started on the first floors under unclear circumstances, and quickly spread to the 12th floor.
The intervention of the fire brigade managed to evacuate the residents of the building in time, although there were also citizens who suffocated. The building lacked emergency stairs, and the fire department's ladders were needed to get the elderly out.
Among the injured were 6 firefighters and a police officer, who were taken to the QSUT located near the building where the fire broke out. Of the injured residents, one woman suffered first-degree injuries.
Also at the scene were the Director of the State Police, Mr. Skënder Hita, who said that Rena forces were activated to open every blocked door of the palace.
The investigation team will determine the cause of the fire in the palace, which turns out to have been engulfed in flames in 2021, when it was under construction./TCH
