Hull City have been promoted to the Premier League in the most dramatic way possible, beating Middlesbrough on goal difference in extra time in the Championship play-off final at Wembley.

Oli McBurnie was the hero of the match, scoring from close range in extra time, following an assist from Yu Hirakawa.

Middlesbrough goalkeeper Sol Brynn deflected the ball, giving McBurnie an opportunity he couldn't miss.

The match was poor in chances, with only two shots on goal throughout the game, but it ended with an explosion of emotions for Hull City fans.

This success comes after a turbulent period surrounding the "Spygate" scandal, which has rocked English football during the Championship play-off phase.

Southampton were banned from the play-offs by the English Football League (EFL) after a club employee was caught filming Middlesbrough training from behind a tree before the first leg of their semi-final.

Although Southampton won the second leg and initially secured a place at Wembley, the EFL's decision completely changed the standings, giving Middlesbrough the chance to play in the final just a few days earlier.

Southampton appealed the decision, but it was overturned, giving Boro little time to prepare for the final.

The club also admitted to spying on Oxford United and Ipswich Town during the regular season.

In the end, however, it was Hull City who took advantage of the chaos and secured a return to English football's elite in dramatic fashion at Wembley.

Hull City's last season in the Premier League was the 2016/17 season, with the team finishing in 18th place with 34 points.

Coincidentally, that season was also Middlesbrough's last in the Premier League.

Boro finished 19th with 28 points, just behind Hull./Express newspaper/
