Antoine Griezmann bid an emotional farewell to Atletico Madrid fans on Sunday, in his final home game before his upcoming move to Orlando City in MLS, while also recording his 100th assist for the club.
In his 500th appearance for Atletico, the 35-year-old provided the crucial assist for Ademola Lookman in the 21st minute, securing a 1-0 victory over Girona in the penultimate La Liga match of the season.
This accurate assist was his 100th for the Madrid club, adding to his 212 goals with Atletico Madrid.
Although teammates Thiago Almada and Marc Pubill tried to help him score a farewell goal at the end of the match, he failed to score, but he still received a grand welcome at the Metropolitano, where a special ceremony was also organized after the match.
Goalkeeper Jan Oblak was among the first to appreciate the Frenchman's huge impact on the club.
"I'm happy that I was able to enjoy these years with him. He should have won the Ballon d'Or. He still has many years ahead of him in the United States," Oblak told the media.
His departure to Orlando City in the MLS with zero parameters marks the end of a legendary era for Atletico Madrid.
Griezmann originally joined the club in 2014 from Real Sociedad for €54 million, then moved to Barcelona in 2019 for €120 million, and returned to Atletico initially on loan in 2021, before making the move permanent for €22 million.
During his two spells at the club, he won the Europa League, the Spanish Super Cup and the UEFA Super Cup./Express newspaper/
