Google sets new deadline for Fitbit users who risk data loss

A long-anticipated change has a new date for this year.

Fitbit was acquired by Google in 2021, but if you had a Fitbit before that date, you may still be using your device and the Fitbit app for iPhone or Android, signed in with a Fitbit account.

Starting in 2023, Google will require new Fitbit users to sign up for the service using their Google account, eliminating the old Fitbit account system.

Google has warned Fitbit users who are still signed in with old accounts that they will need to migrate their data to an active Google account or they will lose their data history. For some users, this could include more than a decade of health and fitness data.

The previous deadline for this migration was February 2, 2026, but as 9to5Google reported, the deadline has now been pushed back to May 19, 2026, giving users more time to make the switch.

“After May 19, 2026, you will no longer be able to sign in to Fitbit with your Fitbit account,” Google said in an updated support page. “To continue using your account, you will need to transfer your Fitbit account to Google.”

“You can download or delete your data at any time before we begin data deletion processing on July 15, 2026.”

This gives you the option to download your data in raw format to browse on your PC, or delete it entirely so that Google no longer stores it on its servers.

Fitbit is now a Google service, just like Gmail, Google Drive, and YouTube, so the company wants users to transfer their data to a Google account to avoid losing it. Google hasn't given a reason for the delay — in fact, the previous February deadline was also pushed back earlier.

Most likely, users who haven't migrated are longtime fans of the Fitbit platform, and Google doesn't want to upset them by automatically deleting their data.

However, the reality is that your Fitbit data was transferred to Google on the day the merger was completed in 2021. Just because you're signed in with a Fitbit account and not Google, doesn't mean your personal data is no longer in Google's hands.

If you miss the new deadline or don't want to transfer your old data, it will be deleted from July 15, 2026. After that date, you can only use your Fitbit device or app by signing in with a Google account – but your data will no longer be available if you don't migrate it before May 16. /GazetaExpress/
