German customs have blocked and returned to Switzerland two suspicious shipments of electronic waste, which were incorrectly declared during cross-border transport.
In early April, customs officials at the Konstanz border crossing on the motorway stopped two shipments coming from Switzerland. According to official statements, the loads were declared as “mixed waste”, but during the inspection it was found that they contained electronic devices glued with plastic parts – electronic waste that requires special treatment.
The loads were destined for a recycling company in Bavaria, Germany, but customs authorities suspected violations of waste export regulations. After verifications, it was confirmed that this type of transport required a special notification and permit for waste management, which was missing.
For this reason, the shipments were considered illegal waste transport and were returned to Switzerland.
According to German customs authorities, the cargoes weighed around 660 kilograms and 425 kilograms, with an estimated value exceeding 400,000 euros (around 366,000 Swiss francs).
This is not the first such case. In February, German customs also returned around 99 tons of waste transported by train, which had also been declared incorrectly./Albinfo.ch/
