Germany is expected to face what meteorologists have assessed as severe conditions as a result of increased snowfall this weekend.

The worsening situation has forced the cancellation of several official events, including the closure of schools. There have also been reports of flight delays and road disruptions in remote areas in some parts of the country.

The German Meteorological Service (DWD) has forecast the weekend's weather as "extreme", warning that up to 20 centimeters of snow could fall in some regions on Friday.

It has also been said that the "combination of wind and snow" could bring chaos and cause major disruptions to traffic, including roadblocks and serious traffic problems, DPA reports, Kosovapress reports.

According to forecasts, storm "Elli" is expected to reach its peak on Friday, before weakening and moving eastward, towards the Czech Republic, on Saturday.

The ruling CDU party has canceled its first major meeting of the year, which was scheduled for Friday and Saturday in Mainz, because of the threat of extreme weather and the expected cancellations of trains and flights, a party spokeswoman said on Thursday.
