FC Barcelona has received some very good news ahead of the home match against Sevilla FC on Sunday afternoon, as Gavi's return to the team has been confirmed.
The much-loved midfielder has not played since mid-August after undergoing knee surgery, and is now available to be included in the squad for the match at the Spotify Camp Nou.
Gavi has not played since the first two games of the season (against RCD Mallorca and Levante UD), as it was later confirmed that he needed surgery on the same knee where he had also suffered a serious ACL ligament injury in 2023. He was initially expected to return in February, but Barcelona decided to exercise maximum caution to avoid any recurrence of the injury.
Now the time has come for Gavi to return to the squad. The Catalan club have announced that the 21-year-old has been given the green light by the medical staff, meaning he could be part of the team for the match against Sevilla on Sunday.
This news comes at a very important moment for Barcelona, which has problems in midfield. Frenkie de Jong is injured, while Pedri and Marc Bernal have played a lot of minutes and have not had enough rest between matches.
However, coach Hansi Flick has made it clear that Gavi will not immediately return to the starting line-up. As happened earlier in the season with Bernal, he plans to gradually ease him back into the game to minimise the risk of another injury.
It remains to be seen whether Gavi will be activated in Sunday's match. Everything is expected to depend on the course of the match, as if the result is too close, the technical staff may decide not to risk him.
