A renowned heart surgeon has raised the alarm over certain eating habits that, according to him and a number of scientific studies, are directly linked to reduced life expectancy and increased risk of serious diseases.
Dr Jeremy London, a cardiovascular surgeon with over 25 years of clinical experience, has identified four main dietary factors that are considered harmful to long-term health: alcohol, processed meat, sugary drinks and excessive consumption of saturated fats.
According to him, sweetened beverages – including carbonated drinks – constitute “empty calories” that do not create a feeling of satiety and promote excessive energy consumption. He has also described them as “liquid death”, emphasizing their negative impact on metabolism and increased risk of chronic diseases.
In parallel, other public health experts have also highlighted the risks of high consumption of sugary drinks, linking them to metabolic and cardiovascular diseases and even a higher risk of cancer.
As for alcohol and processed meat, the World Health Organization classifies both as class 1 carcinogens, meaning there is strong scientific evidence linking them to the development of cancer.
Regarding saturated fats, Dr. London points out that they are found mainly in high-fat meats, butter, and high-fat dairy products. However, some other experts argue that not all dairy products have the same negative impact on cardiovascular health.
Ultra-processed foods, which often contain high levels of sugar, salt, and fat, are also a growing concern and are increasingly linked to an increased risk of various chronic diseases.
However, the expert emphasizes that the goal is not to completely eliminate these products, but to limit them. He suggests that a healthy diet about 80% of the time can be considered an important achievement for long-term well-being.
In conclusion, specialists emphasize that moderation and balance in nutrition remain the key to preventing diseases and maintaining a long and healthy life. /GazetaExpress/
