Chinese authorities said heavy rains that hit southern and central China caused flooding that killed at least ten people, closed schools and businesses in several provinces and disrupted traffic and power supplies.

At least six people died after a pickup truck carrying 15 passengers plunged into a swollen river in southwest China's Guangxi region, and in separate incidents, three people died from flash floods in a village in Hubei, while one person died in the southern province of Hunan, CCTV reported.

The China Meteorological Agency said areas in Jiangxi, Anhui, Hunan, Hubei, Guizhou, Guangxi, Guangdong and Hainan face a high risk of flash floods and landslides.

In parts of central China's Hubei and Hunan provinces, evacuations of residents in flooded areas are underway, and in the city of Jingzhou, the historical rainfall record has been broken since the meteorological station began operating in 1953.

Local officials said the Hubei Fire and Rescue Bureau has dispatched more than 1,410 firefighters, more than 90 rescue vehicles, more than 1,500 pieces of equipment and supplies, and 100 ships to Jingzhou, according to China Daily.

Public transport, including city buses, taxis, as well as intercity transport, has been suspended in flood-affected areas and authorities have urged residents to avoid unnecessary travel.
