England will become the first country in the world to launch vaccination against the sexually transmitted infection, gonorrhoea.
According to British media, the vaccine will not be available to everyone. Initially, the focus will be on gay and bisexual men who have had many sexual partners or who have previously had a sexually transmitted infection.
It is known that this vaccine has an effectiveness of 30-40%, however, the National Health Service of England hopes that it will help reduce the increasing number of cases.
According to reports, in 2023 alone, over 85,000 cases of the infection, which does not always produce symptoms, were recorded.
The gonorrhea vaccine is not specifically designed for this infection, but is the vaccine currently given to infants against meningitis B. It has been discovered that the bacteria that cause both diseases are similar, so the vaccine known as MenB is thought to reduce the incidence of gonorrhea infection by a third.
The decision to use this vaccine was also made because the infection is becoming increasingly difficult to treat, raising fears that it could one day become totally untreatable.
