A renowned doctor has revealed the unexpected benefits of sleeping naked — and why everyone should practice it.
According to sleep medicine physician Dr. David Rosen, sleeping naked can help you sleep better, reduce the risk of genital infections, improve male fertility, and strengthen your bond with your partner.
According to Dr. Rosen, the benefits come from the cooling effect created by removing your pajamas. A lower body temperature at night helps to properly balance natural sleep-promoting hormones, like melatonin.
If skin temperature is too high — which usually occurs in a room above 21 degrees Celsius — this can disrupt hormones to the point of preventing deeper, more restorative levels of sleep from being achieved.
“Staying cool at night is a simple way to improve sleep quality,” said Dr. Rosen, who works with the American Academy of Sleep Medicine.
"For those who prefer to sleep with thick, warm blankets, sleeping naked is a good way to balance out the extra warmth."
Another benefit of sleeping without clothes is the reduction in the risk of vaginal yeast infections, otherwise known as "thrush."
The fungus that causes this infection thrives in warm, moist environments, such as tight pajamas that come into contact with the genital area, according to a medical report co-authored by Dr. Rosen.
The infection, caused by an overgrowth of the yeast Candida, causes pain and itching and is often linked to wearing very tight underwear or clothing.
Airing the intimate area helps stop the growth of fungi.
Men are also advised to avoid tight clothing while sleeping, as this can affect male fertility.
Research shows that very tight underwear can increase the temperature of the scrotum, reducing sperm count and vitality.
There is evidence that a cooler scrotum aids in sperm motility, helping it reach the egg for fertilization.
Couples can also benefit from sleeping naked, as skin-to-skin contact triggers the release of the love hormone, oxytocin.
Studies show that this hormone helps reduce stress and increases feelings of happiness and contentment.
A 2024 survey of 20,000 people from around the world found that 20 percent of Britons choose to sleep naked.
While seven in ten women prefer to wear pajamas to bed, men are more likely to sleep in underwear or without clothes altogether, with more than 22 percent choosing to sleep naked.
This trend is even more pronounced among seniors over 50, with over 32 percent of this age group preferring to sleep without clothing, according to research conducted by bed and mattress company Sealy. /Express newspaper/
