With the arrival of autumn, many people notice that their face becomes drier, more sensitive, and often flushes easily.

Dermatologists call this phenomenon "autumn face".

Why does this happen?

According to Dr. Derrick Phillips, dermatologist and spokesperson for The British Skin Foundation, it's all about the state of the skin barrier – the natural shield that protects the skin from bacteria, viruses and pollutants, while retaining moisture inside.

When this barrier is damaged, water leaves and irritants enter, causing dryness, redness, and inflammation.

The main causes in autumn:

The air becomes drier and loses moisture.

Central heating worsens dry skin.

Long, hot showers remove natural protective oils.

Excessive use of aggressive products, exfoliants, or ingredients like retinol or acids.

Also, stress, aging, health conditions (such as diabetes), and skin diseases such as dermatitis, eczema, and rosacea make the barrier even more fragile.

How to repair the skin barrier?

Streamline your routine – limit yourself to a gentle cleanser, a nourishing moisturizer, and sunscreen.

Hydration is key – look for products with ceramides, hyaluronic acid, fatty acids, and glycerin.

Change your cleanser according to the season – if you have dry skin, use an oil-based cleanser.

Use a humidifier if you are often in heated environments.

Avoid long showers with very hot water.

How long does it take to recover?

If you use gentle, moisturizing products, the skin barrier usually takes 6–8 weeks to repair. In more severe cases, prescription creams or medical treatments may be needed. /GazetaExpress/
