Do women have a harder time building muscle?

The idea that women have a harder time building muscle mass than men is a common misconception. According to muscle physiology researchers, the differences exist, but they don't affect the ability to develop muscle through exercise as much as people think.

Men typically have a higher muscle-to-fat ratio, largely due to higher testosterone levels that increase during puberty. Women, on the other hand, have a higher percentage of body fat, partly related to the hormone estrogen.

However, this doesn't mean that women build muscle less effectively. Even though women's testosterone levels are significantly lower (about 15–20 times lower than men's), studies show that the response to resistance training is very similar when measured relatively—that is, in percent improvement.

This means that, in most cases, there is no need for different training programs based on gender. The basic principles of weight training work the same for both sexes and can produce comparable results, especially at a young age.

Another issue is body composition. Even with exercise, women tend to maintain a higher percentage of body fat than men. This ratio can be altered to some extent, but extreme reductions in body fat require very strict diets and intense exercise regimens.

In such extreme cases, health consequences may occur, such as hormonal disorders, irregular menstrual cycles, and effects on fertility. For this reason, although it is possible to change body composition, it is not always recommended from a health point of view. /GazetaExpress/
