Kosovo has entered the final constitutional week for electing a President, and failure to reach an agreement risks leading the country to early elections.
In recent days, Prime Minister and Vetevendosje Movement leader Albin Kurti has offered the two largest opposition parties, PDK and LDK, government posts and the position of Speaker of Parliament, insisting that the post of President remain in VV’s hands. However, the offers have been rejected by the opposition.
Bekim Çollaku, former Foreign Minister of Kosovo, said in an interview with Euronews Albania that Kurti never intended to engage in serious negotiations with the opposition.
According to him, he deliberately left the issue of the president until last after voting for the government, in the hope of reaching some "bargain with the opposition."
"It was Kurti's strategic goal to reach this situation and there was a lack of political will from Kurti to make a genuine political agreement with any of the political entities. If he had had a minimal will for a governing partner immediately after last year's elections, he should have invited one of the entities to serious talks and talked about sharing the government. He said that he does not need a governing partner, voted for the government and deliberately left the issue of the president for last, perhaps with the thought that the opposition parties would have no other choice but to accept any last-minute bargaining offer, but his calculations have backfired," said Çollaku.
