Civil rights activist Jesse Jackson died Tuesday morning at the age of 84.
Jackson passed away peacefully, surrounded by his family, according to a statement posted on Facebook.
“Our father was a servant leader — not just to our family, but to the oppressed, the voiceless, and the neglected around the world,” they added, reports New York Post, reports Gazeta Express.
"We shared it with the world and, in return, the world became part of our extended family."
"His unwavering belief in justice, equality and love lifted millions of people, and we ask you to honor his memory by continuing to fight for the values he lived for."
Jackson's cause of death has not been announced.
The death of the renowned civil rights leader comes after he was hospitalized in Chicago last November for progressive supranuclear palsy — a rare brain disease.
"He was initially diagnosed with Parkinson's disease; however, last April his condition was confirmed as PSP. The family appreciates any prayers at this time."
On November 16, his family dismissed “inaccurate media reports” that the activist was on some form of life support after suffering a significant drop in blood pressure, saying he was still “in stable condition” and “breathing without the aid of machines.”
"In fact, today he called for 2,000 churches to prepare 2,000 food baskets to prevent malnutrition during the holiday season," his son, Yusef, added in a statement.
