China reiterates calls for peace talks and supports Iran's right to nuclear energy.
Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi met with his Iranian counterpart Abbas Araghchi during a bilateral meeting in Beijing on Wednesday.
The US and Iran should reach a complete ceasefire, while Tehran has the right to pursue nuclear energy, the Chinese foreign minister told his Iranian counterpart in Beijing during their first face-to-face meeting since the war that has rocked global energy supplies, reports the BBC. CNN.
Regarding the almost complete closure of the Strait of Hormuz, Wang Yi said that Beijing "hopes that the parties involved will respond as soon as possible to the strong calls of the international community" to restore normal and safe navigation.
“China believes that the complete cessation of hostilities should not be delayed, and the resumption of war is even more undesirable,” he told Abbas Araghchi on Wednesday, according to a statement in English from China’s foreign ministry.
Wang also added that China "values Iran's commitment not to develop nuclear weapons, and believes that Iran has the legitimate right to the peaceful use of nuclear energy," according to the same statement.
Wednesday's meeting comes days before US President Donald Trump is expected to visit Beijing.
