Fabio Capello assured that Milan can recover the seven-point gap in the title race against Inter.
"At Real Madrid I have recovered a nine-point gap from Barcelona," he said.
The advantage had been 10 points until last night, when Pervis Estupiñán's goal gave Milan a 1-0 victory over their city rivals.
Now the title race has reopened, although a seven-point gap with 10 games remaining remains a major obstacle.
"Inter still have a big advantage, but I think above all now it's a psychological issue," Capello said in his role as an analyst on Sky Sport Italia.
"In every match recently, Inter have alternated moments of very good football with others of extremely slow play. This gives opponents the opportunity to create problems for them."
He was asked how coach Cristian Chivu could solve the lack of continuity and intensity in Inter's game.
"They need to play with more humility and help each other, something I haven't seen enough of lately at Inter," Capello added.
Meanwhile, Milan is in good form and has an advantage over the teams fighting for the top-4, so it has practically nothing to lose – which according to the former Rossoneri coach could be very important.
"They have a pretty good schedule of matches, so why not try to recover ground towards first place? I've done that with Real Madrid, recovering nine points on Barcelona, precisely because they relaxed from the big advantage.
"Inter must be very careful not to make the same mistake. The risk now is that the players will not have the same confidence and focus."
Capello was also asked what he would say to Milan's players if he were in Massimiliano Allegri's place.
"I think they should be told that they have almost achieved their objective, so now it's time to have fun and enjoy the game. I saw Inter very pale, without strength and determination. I don't know why, but Inter didn't play the derby with the right attitude.
"I was surprised by how slowly the Nerazzurri moved the ball. Maybe they were missing Hakan Çalhanoğlu in midfield."
Lautaro Martínez was absent due to an injury, but asked to be on the bench just to be near his teammates.
"Lautaro is a true captain, one of those players who can wake up the team, run everywhere and work hard, not just score goals. It is precisely this determination that Inter are missing right now," Capello concluded./Express newspaper/
