James Pettifer, a British professor of history at the University of Oxford, answered a series of questions from an RTS journalist in an interview on Serbian public television about the war period in Kosovo.
When the journalist referred to the Kosovo Liberation Army as a “terrorist organization,” the Briton made a point.
"One of the topics you deal with is the Kosovo Liberation Army. You wrote that it was probably the first successful insurgent movement in Europe after World War II. We consider it a terrorist organization. In fact, even the United States considered it such until June 1998, when Richard Holbrooke met with KLA leaders. Was this a turning point in US policy?" was the question of the RTS journalist.
"As we know, those who are terrorists to some, are freedom fighters to others," Pettifer replied.
"You can see this every day on television in the case of Palestine. No one in the world agrees on what exactly is a 'terrorist'. Political scientists write long books about this," he said.
After Richard Holbrooke's meeting with KLA representatives, he says that "there was definitely a major change in policy."
