Leonardo Bonucci admits it is very difficult for Pep Guardiola to become coach of the Italian national team, but says "dreaming costs nothing."
Former Italy national team defender Bonucci dreams of appointing Guardiola as head of the "Azzuri" national team.
"Following the list of names that have been mentioned these days, if it is a real desire to start again, I would start with the possibility of having Pep Guardiola, because his behavior would mean a drastic change from the past," Bonucci said in Madrid, via "Gazzetta dello Sport", while he was part of the 2026 World Sports Laureates Awards.
"I think it's very difficult, but dreaming costs nothing," he added.
Bonucci was one of Gennaro Gattuso's assistants, but did not resign after Italy's elimination from the World Cup play-offs, like coach and Head of Delegation, Gianluigi Buffon.
Bonucci is part of the Federation's technical structure and was independent of the previous coaching staff. His contract expires in June 2026.
"I have been told to stay, to connect the scouting part of the new players, who could be invited for the June matches," he confirmed.
The new president of the Italian Football Federation will be elected on June 22, while Italy's friendlies against Greece and Luxembourg earlier that month will be managed by Italy U21 national team coach Silvio Baldini.
Former Bari, Juventus and Milan defender, Bonucci played 121 games for the Italian national team, scoring eight goals.
He was part of the "Azzure" team that won the 2020 European Championship - played in 2021 - and scored the equalizer in the final against England at Wembley Stadium./Express newspaper/
