In a match played in scorching temperatures on Tuesday, Benfica secured a historic 1-0 victory over Bayern Munich to take top spot in Group C of the Club World Cup. The only goal of the match came in the first half from Andreas Schjelderup, after a low pass from Fredrik Aursnes, who took advantage of a mistake by the Bavarian defense.
This was Benfica's first ever victory over Bayern, and thanks to it, the Portuguese will face the winner of the Chelsea - Esperance de Tunis pair in the round of 1. On the other hand, Bayern, who had secured qualification earlier, came second and will face Flamengo, the leader of Group D.
Thomas Tuchel's German team played with a rotated formation and showed little intensity in the game. In the second half, Joshua Kimmich thought he had equalized, but his goal was disallowed for offside by Harry Kane.
Benfica are now seen as one of the strongest teams in the tournament, while Bayern will be looking to restore their shine in the knockout stages.
