Bayern Munich have announced that Jamal Musiala will face a long recovery period after the fractured leg he suffered during a clash with Paris Saint-Germain goalkeeper Gianluigi Donnarumma in the Club World Cup.
In a statement released on Sunday, Bayern confirmed that Musiala returned from Florida to Munich that morning to undergo surgery following the injury suffered in the quarter-final against PSG.
According to doctors, Musiala has broken his fibula (one of the bones in his lower leg) and also has a dislocated and fractured ankle.
Bayern board member for sporting affairs, Max Eberl, stated:
"This serious injury and long-term absence are a huge shock for Jamal and for all of us.
"This hits FC Bayern hard. Everyone knows how important Jamal is to our game and the central role he plays in the team. In addition to the sporting aspect, this also has a huge human impact. Jamal had just returned from another injury and will now be out for a long time again. He will have our full support, we will be by his side and we can't wait to see him on the pitch again."
Goalkeeper Manuel Neuer was particularly critical of Donnarumma for this incident:
"It's a situation where you don't have to get involved like that – it's reckless. He accepts the risk of harming the opponent. I said to him: 'Aren't you going to go and see how our player is?' – It's a matter of respect. He went later, but fair play is always important. I would have reacted differently."
Bayern coach Vincent Kompany expressed his emotion:
"I've rarely felt so angry about an event on the field. Someone like Jamal lives for this game. He had just come back from an injury, and then this happens. And you feel helpless."
After the match, Donnarumma reacted on Instagram: "All my prayers and best wishes are with you, Jamal."
Meanwhile, PSG coach Luis Enrique said: "Musiala was very unlucky that Gigi fell on him... I wish him the best. There was no bad intention."/Express newspaper/
