BBC investigation: Migrants are abusing victim of violence status to secure residency in Britain

A recent BBC investigation has revealed that some immigrants are falsely claiming to be victims of domestic violence in order to gain permanent residency in the UK.

According to the report, these individuals are exploiting a legal mechanism designed to protect genuine victims of abuse, known as the Migrant Victims of Domestic Violence Scheme. This scheme allows applicants to obtain expedited residence permits, unlike regular procedures such as asylum, which take years to complete.

Lawyers and experts in the field have raised concerns that insufficient checks by British authorities are allowing such applications to be approved on the basis of minimal evidence. As a result, British citizens have faced serious personal consequences due to false accusations.

The investigation also reveals cases where migrants, both men and women, enter into relationships or marriages with British citizens and then, once settled in the country, make false claims of domestic violence to secure legal status.

In some cases, according to the BBC, these people are also encouraged by online legal advisers who suggest they fabricate stories of abuse. An undercover BBC journalist documented a meeting with an immigration adviser who offered to fabricate a false story in exchange for £900 to help the client secure residency in the country.

Data shows that the number of applications for accelerated residence on the grounds of domestic violence has reached over 5,500 per year, marking an increase of more than 50% in the last three years.
