The hopes that were raised during the marathon talks in Islamabad have been put on hold for the moment, writes the BBC.
The necessary trust between the two long-time enemies has not been established, it seems. The key points of disagreement have not been overcome.
But, as the Iranian foreign ministry spokesman has pointed out, no one realistically expected an agreement to be reached in a single meeting, no matter how serious, high-level, and lengthy it was.
What remains unknown at the moment is whether any kind of foundation has been laid for continuing negotiations during the remaining two-week ceasefire – and to what extent either side might be willing to make concessions to secure an agreement that still appears to be in the interests of both, as well as the rest of the world.
