Atlético Madrid has taken a big step towards the quarterfinals of the Champions League, after defeating Tottenham Hotspur with a comprehensive 5:2 score in the first leg of the 1/8 final stage.
The Madrid team started the match furiously and took the lead in the 6th minute with Marcos Llorente's goal for 1:0.
Just eight minutes later, Antoine Griezmann doubled the lead, while a minute later Julián Álvarez scored for 3:0, completely shocking the English team's defense.
The home team's dominance continued and in the 22nd minute Robin Le Normand also found the net for 4:0. Tottenham managed to react four minutes later, when Pedro Porro scored for 4:1, the result with which the first half ended.
In the second half, Atlético continued to control the game and in the 55th minute Álvarez scored his second personal goal for 5:1.
By the end of the match, the guests only managed to soften the defeat with Dominic Solanke's goal in the 76th minute for the final score of 5:2.
With this decisive victory, Atlético Madrid takes a huge advantage before the return match in London, while Tottenham will have an extremely difficult mission to overturn this result.
