Takehiro Tomiyasu will no longer be at Arsenal. The 26-year-old Japanese defender has reached an agreement with the London club to terminate his contract early, BBC Sport reports. The decision comes after several seasons marred by injuries, which have prevented the player from establishing himself as a key part of Mikel Arteta's scheme.
Tomiyasu joined Arsenal in the summer of 2021 from Bologna, and has raised high expectations thanks to his defensive versatility and tactical discipline. In his first few months, he has impressed as a reliable right-back who can also play as a centre-back.
However, his progress was interrupted by a series of physical problems, which constantly limited his participation in matches. Despite attempts to regain his best form, Tomiyasu failed to find consistency, which led to an amicable parting of ways between him and the club – to allow the player to seek a new destination to revive his career.
On the other hand, Arsenal will free up space in the squad and in the wage budget, an important aspect for future reinforcements.
Although his future destination is yet to be confirmed, Tomiyasu is expected to receive offers from both European and Asian clubs, where his name continues to carry great weight. His departure marks the end of a chapter that began with enthusiasm, but ended with disappointment due to lack of regular activation.
