Are you a "Gangster" driver? Wrong positions that damage your back

Many people in Britain do this every day, but it seems you may be driving in the wrong position.

Josh Newsom, chiropractor at Ancoats Chiropractic Clinic, revealed four common driving positions that can cause back damage.

The Rollercoaster: Drivers sit with their shoulders hunched and their hands clenched tightly. This constant tension strains the neck, shoulders, and arms, causing muscle fatigue and stiffness, especially in slow-moving traffic.

The Gangster: Involves sitting very far back and leaning to one side. While it may look “cool,” this adds uneven pressure to the spine and pelvis, increasing stress on the lower back and hips during long rides.

The Racer: The driver sits too far back with arms and legs outstretched. This limits joint mobility, reduces the natural ability to absorb shock, and adds pressure to the shoulders, hips, and lower back, especially in stop-and-go driving.

The Hamster: Sits too close to the steering wheel with a hunched back. This puts constant pressure on the neck and upper back, causing stiffness and pain during daily commutes.

How to drive like a pro

Ancoats Chiropractic Clinic, in collaboration with Carmoola, recommends the optimal position, called The Pro:

Sit up straight, with your hips slightly higher than your knees.

Keep your elbows slightly bent.

Rest your head on the headrest.

“Allow the seat to support the body, maintain natural posture, and avoid forced positions,” advises Mr. Newsom.

Even small changes can significantly reduce stress on your back and make everyday driving much more comfortable. /GazetaExpress/
