The latest iOS update brings compatibility for Apple's new accessory, priced at £29.
If you have an iPhone in your hands, there's a good chance you have a pending software update that you can install right away. Apple just released the latest version of iOS, iOS 26.2.1, and it's important to install it as soon as possible if you plan on using the company's newest device.
As the two decimal points suggest, iOS 26.2.1 is a relatively small update to the iPhone software, but it brings full compatibility with Apple's new AirTag. Unveiled on Monday, the new AirTag costs just £29 and features significant improvements over the first generation of this smart tag, launched by Apple in 2021.
If you want to use the new AirTag and take advantage of the wider range thanks to the Ultra Wideband chip, as well as the stronger speaker to locate the tag that is ringing, you need to install iOS 26.2.1.
Apple announces that: “This update brings support for AirTag (2nd generation) as well as bug fixes.”
The new AirTag also improves the smart Precision Finding tool, which displays arrows on the screen to locate the tag, bringing this functionality, previously exclusive to the iPhone, even to the smaller screens of the latest Apple Watch models.
All iPhones, including the iPhone 11 series and later, are compatible with iOS 26.2.1. You can go to the Settings app > General > Software Update to check if there is an update to download or install.
Apple hasn't provided many details about the "bug fixes" this update includes, but it's always recommended to install the latest version of the software - even if you don't plan on buying the new AirTag.
Meanwhile, bigger iOS updates are expected later this year. According to 9to5Mac, iOS 26.3 is expected to bring full end-to-end encryption for RCS messages sent between iPhones and Androids, a big step towards replacing traditional SMS.
For years, messages sent from Android to iPhone appeared as green balloons and were sent as SMS. But Apple recently added RCS (Rich Communication Services) compatibility to Android, which means messages are now sent and received over the internet in a more secure way, including support for high-resolution photos and handwriting recognition.
The addition of end-to-end encryption is a big step towards easing the communication barriers between iPhone and Android, although this change is most noticeable in the US. In the UK, WhatsApp usage covers most of the way, but if you prefer the Messages app on your iPhone, iOS 26.3 is an update worth waiting for. /GazetaExpress/
