Norway's ambassador to Jordan, Mona Juul, has submitted her resignation over the Epstein scandal. Norwegian diplomacy had played an important role in efforts to resolve the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.
“It is a fair and necessary decision… Juul’s contacts with convicted sex offender Epstein demonstrate a serious error in judgment,” Norwegian Foreign Minister Espen Barth Eide stated, emphasizing that the decision was made after discussions with the Foreign Ministry.
According to Norwegian media, Jeffrey Epstein, who committed suicide in 2019 in prison, had transferred $10 million to Juul's two children and her husband, diplomat Terje Rød-Larsen, who had also participated in the negotiations for the Oslo Accords.
According to Eide, the ministry will continue contacts with Juul as part of an investigation that is still ongoing, to determine the extent of their relationship and transactions.
Speaking on behalf of his client, lawyer Thomas Skjelbred stated that Juul resigned. "because the situation in which she finds herself prevents her from exercising her duties responsibly" and that this has been a great source of stress for her and her family."
Norway's political and royal circles have been affected by the Epstein affair. Among the names mentioned are the president and CEO of the World Economic Forum, Børge Brende, as well as former Prime Minister Thorbjørn Jagland (1996–1997), who is under investigation for corruption.
Princess Mette-Marit, the wife of the heir to the Norwegian throne, whose name is mentioned several times in millions of pages of documents published by the US Department of Justice, declared on Friday that she "deeply regrets" her "friendship" with the American sex offender./Panorama.al
