Lionel Messi has wasted no time in signaling that he is ready for another spectacular season. The Argentine superstar scored his first goal of 2026 in a pre-season friendly as Inter Miami drew 2-2 with Barcelona SC of Ecuador.
Messi scored an incredible goal, taking the ball from the midfield circle, passing a defender and shooting accurately from inside the area to beat goalkeeper Jose Contreras. A typical "Messi" action, which ignited the enthusiasm of the fans and confirmed that the return of MLS is getting closer and closer.
In addition to the goal, the 38-year-old also registered an assist for young striker German Berterame, a partnership that is expected to be key throughout the season. Inter Miami aims to continue its dominance in the league, having won the MLS Cup for the first time in history in December 2025.
Last season was a historic one for Messi, who won the MLS MVP award for the second year in a row. He recorded 48 goal contributions (29 goals and 19 assists), ranking second in league history and becoming only the second player to lead MLS in both goals and assists, behind Sebastian Giovinco.
As he prepares for the 2026 season with Inter Miami and the World Cup with Argentina, Messi still seems to have plenty of energy to torment defenders in MLS. With the club moving into its new stadium, Miami Freedom Park, in April, the Herons' ambitions are only set to grow.
Inter Miami will also participate in the Concacaf Champions Cup and Leagues Cup, while the goal remains clear: continued success.
