Faton Morina, 32 years old, a tourist from Kosovo, was on the postal bus when the tragedy occurred, leaving behind 6 victims, including the perpetrator.
“I jumped out immediately, without shoes,” Morina tells Blick, still shaken by the experience. He was sitting across from author Roger K. (†65), when the latter doused himself with gasoline and set himself on fire.
“When he set himself on fire, his face was calm, without any emotion,” Morina adds. The incident occurred a week ago in Kerzers, Fribourg, and injured five other passengers, including Morina, who is being treated at the University Hospital of Lausanne, albinfo.ch reports.
In his account, Morina describes the seconds of terror: “I saw that he had stood up and had been sprayed with gasoline from a canister that I estimated was about 3 liters. I tried to call out to him: ‘No! Stop!’ But the flames engulfed everything very quickly.”
He describes his attempts to escape: “At first I tried to get out through the middle door, but it wouldn’t open. I was soon filled with smoke and couldn’t see anything. I felt helpless.” However, at one point he escaped by suddenly jumping out, surviving through the flames and smoke.
Even a week later, the terrifying memories haunt Morina. He particularly remembers seeing the driver, the perpetrator, and a young passenger, Lara Baumgartner (†26), who lost their lives.
Morina says: “This event has made me realize what really matters: my family and my life. I want to enjoy them and travel more.”
He plans to watch a Real Madrid match and visit Switzerland again, despite the horror he experienced.
Before parting ways with Blick, Morina sent his message: "I want to express my sincere condolences to all the victims and their families. I'm sorry I couldn't help anyone."
