Meat-free brand THIS™ has immediately launched a recall of its THIS™ Isn't Chicken Deli Pieces product, following concerns that it could cause allergic reactions that could be fatal.
The products have been pulled from shelves because they contain soy and wheat (gluten), which are not declared on the label.
According to the Food Standards Agency (FSA), this makes the products a "potential health risk" for anyone with:
soy allergy
wheat/gluten allergy or intolerance
celiac disease
Consumers with any of these conditions should not consume the products, but can return them to the store where they were purchased for a full refund.
Return details:
Package: 120g
Expiration date: until November 13, 2025
According to the brand, the problem occurred during production, when a batch of THIS™ Isn't Chicken Deli Pieces was mistakenly packaged with labels intended for THIS™ Isn't Cocktail Sausages.
The FSA announces recalls when there is a risk to consumers, due to missing or incorrect allergen labelling, or any other issue that could pose a health risk. All stores selling the product will place clear notices on the shelf, explaining the reason for the recall and the steps consumers should follow.
The dangers of allergies
Soy allergy can cause mild to severe symptoms, including itching, swelling of the face, lips, or eyes, tingling or itching in the mouth, stomach pain, vomiting, and diarrhea.
In severe cases, even the smallest amount can cause anaphylaxis, a potentially fatal allergic reaction.
Coeliac disease affects one in 100 Britons, where eating gluten causes the immune system to attack the small intestine. Although occasional consumption may not cause intestinal damage, it can cause diarrhoea, abdominal pain or vomiting that lasts for several days.
Severe allergies to wheat or gluten can cause anaphylaxis.
This recall comes a few days after the emergency recall of three Milka chocolates from the Home Bargains store, due to the same concerns regarding allergens. /GazetaExpress/
