There are 15 days left until the end of the constitutional deadline for electing the President of Kosovo, and in the absence of a political agreement, the country risks going to new elections.
Kosovo Prime Minister Albin Kurti must secure the necessary support in the Assembly by April 28, a deadline set by the Constitutional Court of Kosovo. However, despite the passage of time, political parties have still not reached an agreement on the name of the new president, writes Reporteri
Kurti has consistently emphasized his willingness to find a political solution that would avoid new elections, which, according to him, would not bring significant changes to the composition of the Assembly.
"We are determined to avoid new elections, because new elections would not be a solution for the necessary number of 80 deputies. In other words, it is difficult to imagine an election campaign where we bring back our platforms and programs, with the same commitments we again seek the votes of the same citizens for a result that we know cannot be much different," he declared.
As part of the consultations, last week he held a meeting with the leader of the Democratic League of Kosovo, Lumir Abdixhiku, which was assessed as constructive, while other meetings have been announced in the coming days.
After the meeting, Abdixhiku announced that there were no concrete developments.
"Now we look over the next week to see the possibility of other meetings. That's the truth, there are no other developments. We haven't proposed a name, we haven't given anything, and we haven't been asked for anything yet."
He emphasized that the process should begin with principles and not with specific names, describing this issue as consensual.
"No, it is unlikely that I will nominate myself, because the issue of the president is a consensual issue. So, we need to talk about principles once... If not, then we prepare for new elections."
On the other hand, Kurti has also announced a meeting with the leader of the Democratic Party of Kosovo, Bedri Hamza, emphasizing that the position of president represents the unity of citizens and requires broader political involvement.
However, PDK has announced that they have not yet received an official invitation for a meeting and have requested that the prime minister's initiative be concretized through an official letter, before it is reviewed in the party bodies and a final position is taken.
Meanwhile, today, LVV MP Driton Hyseni expressed optimism that a solution can be found for the election of the president within the constitutional deadline.
He said that all political entities should make efforts to avoid elections.
"I think the meetings have this goal, to find a common language and to get out of the crisis that has accompanied us over the past weeks regarding the issue of the president. I think we are on the right track and will exhaust all possibilities. Now we have time ahead, there are still many days available and I think that each of the political actors should do their utmost to come to a solution regarding the head of state and to avoid elections, which are not desirable for anyone," he told rtv21.
In these circumstances, as the constitutional deadline approaches, it remains unclear whether the political spectrum will reach an agreement on the election of the president, or whether the country will face a new electoral process within 45 days.
