Albanian Parliament dismisses president Ilir Meta

Albania’s parliament on Wednesday dismissed president Ilir Meta for allegedly for allegedly violating the constitution.

With 105 votes in favor, seven against and three abstained MPs in the 140-seat parliament voted for Meta’s dismissal, in a motion initiated by the ruling Socialist Party (PS). But the Parliament’s vote needs an approval from the country’s Constitutional Court expected to be taken within three months. Meta’s five-year mandate as the President of Albania expires on 22 July 2022.

Procedures on Meta’s dismissal were launched after ruling Socialists and the Government alleged that Meta has violated some of the provisions of the Constitutions, including siding with certain parties ahead of recent general election held in Albania in April. During today’s session the Parliament has initially approved a report of an ad-hoc committee which confirmed that Ilir Meta has violated some of the constitutional provisions. /GazetaExpress/
